No — there's no legal licence for operating a scissor lift in New Zealand (the Australian "Yellow Card" and 11-metre licence rules you'll see online don't apply here). Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, operators must be trained and competent, and most commercial sites ask for evidence — typically NZQA Unit Standard 23960 or an industry SilverCard. We walk every hirer through the machine at delivery, and homeowners are welcome to hire too.

Match three things: height, ground and access. Pick a working height at or above the highest point you need to reach; match the ground to the machine (flat slab → electric, rough or sloped → 4WD diesel); then check access — doorway width, stowed height and floor loading if you're on a suspended slab. Simple rule: concrete inside, electric — dirt outside, diesel. Electric lifts run silent with zero fumes and non-marking tyres, made for warehouses, retail and finished floors. Diesel rough-terrain lifts bring 4WD traction, ground clearance and self-levelling for construction sites and uneven ground. If your job spans both, tell us — sometimes the answer is one machine swapped mid-hire.

Height: choose working height above your task height, and check stowed height clears doorways and overhead services. Terrain: slab-only machines must stay on firm, level concrete, while rough-terrain models handle grass, gravel and slopes within their rated limit — and on suspended floors, the machine's weight matters as much as its reach.
